We had a great trip to Red Rocks this year with lots of good climbing and lots of wonderful people! Larry was back for another year (his third in a row), John was back again too (his second in a row), and Victoria, Carson, Gordon, and Sonya joined us for their first trip to this great climbing destination. We had three great trips in Red Rocks last week that were filled with classic climbing, great desert weather, and lots of smiles. Following is a short compilation of words and photos that describe the three programs led by guide Matt Wade. Consider joining us for a trip in 2012! Call or email for dates.
The week began with two days of climbing with Larry from Michigan. Matt and Larry started by warming up on single pitch routes in Willow Springs, including the classic Spiderline (5.7).

Matt and Troy shot this video with Troy’s GoPro helmet cam during their trip to Red Rocks last year. The climb was great and playing with the GoPro was just as fun! Troy arrived in Las Vegas on a warm Saturday night and I could tell by the smile on his face that he was eager to climb. After a busy fall with limited time for climbing, he was really excited to get on a big route and log lots of mileage on the rock. The forecast was calling for one more day of good weather before a big storm system was scheduled to arrive, so we made a plan to go as big as we could with the weather window we had. After discussing different options, we settled on an ascent of Johnny Vegas & Solar Slab. These two routes combine to offer 11 pitches of climbing in the 5.6-5.7 level of difficulty, and amount to nearly 1500′ of climbing. Mileage here we come!

Red Rocks National Conservation Area, located just 35 minutes West of Las Vegas, is known throughout the climbing world for high-quality sandstone rock climbing. Larry, John, and I had the pleasure of experiencing the great climbing in this area last week, and everyone agreed the reputation is well-deserved!
