It’s April and ski mountaineering season is in full swing in the San Juan Mountains.  With good snow conditions and reliable weather, we have been making ski descents of classic peaks like Red Mountain #3, Gilpin Peak, and the Chattanooga Chutes. Check out these photos from our recent trips:

The Snake Couloir is one of the most sought after ski descents in the San Juans.  It will test your mettle for steep skiing, climbing, altitude, and ropework – and will reward you with a beautiful line through a tight couloir followed by a vast, wide open bowl below.  If you’re ready to expand your ski mountaineering skills and push your skiing to new levels, the Snake Couloir is for you.  We offer guided descents of the Snake Couloir throughout the spring season.

Following is a trip report from our 2014 Alaska Ski Mountaineering Course.  The participants – Chris, JP, Zack, & Chelsea – accomplished numerous high level ski tours while learning the ropes of ski mountaineering.  By the end of the week, they were using their new skills to lead the group through steep, complex climbs and descents in the heart of the Chugach Range near Valdez, Alaska.

We just completed our first OPUS Hut trip of the season and it was a terrific success.  This fantastic alpine lodge offers high quality skiing, fully catered meals, and a charming atmosphere that is akin to the European hut tradition.  Guide Gary Ryan and client Larry Hall skied nearly 15,000′ vertical feet of powder over three days while enjoying the comforts of this quaint alpine lodge.

Each year in October, we travel to Red Rock National Conservation Area for 10 days of fun-filled, world-class rock climbing. Located outside of Las Vegas, Red Rocks is home to rock climbing of every type, from single pitch sport routes near the car to 17-pitch adventure routes in the backcountry.  The following trip report showcases some of the great climbing that guide Matt Wade and clients Cheryl, Jared, Angel, Ilya, Jim, and Alex did during our 10-day trip this year.  Hope to see you next year!
